rpi B+
I'm going to pick up a new pi tomorrow to play with HG and IR with eden board v1

can I use a B+ for this or do I need a model B?

Yes you can use B+. There is also the advantage in using A+, B+ that you can use a standard 2x13 header instead of the extra tall one.
