I'm new to zwave so pardon me if none of this makes any sense...

I have an Aeon Z Stick connected to home genie and some Aeon dimmer switches as part of the network. I have created a scene to gradually bring up the brightness of the lights in my bedroom when I wake up, and it's working.

The problem is that I don't have a convenient way to turn them off. I played around with using my smartphone to hit an URL that makes an API call to turn off the lights, but it's not really convenient to use my phone for this. It's OK but I'd rather have a single-purpose remote.

I bought an Aeon Minimote without knowing that it doesn't exactly play nice with HomeGenie, but someone on this forum mentioned it was OK because he got it working with its own scenes.

It seems like I can't have the dimmers be part of the HG network and the minimote network, though. It seems they can only belong to one or the other. So I can't have HG turn on the lights, and use the remote to turn them off.

Are there any good solutions for this?

Did you try to associate minimote to your zstick ?
It work fine for me with AEON LABS Keyfob, after association, a button pressed appear in a pop-up with his number. If that work for you, you just have to create a wizard script of c#,... script.
I don't use my keyfob in "scene mode", the control is doing by HomeGenie.

Can you elaborate on how you set it up?

I did try to pair the minimote with my zstick and it showed up as a generic zwave node. I'm not sure what type to set it as.

I'm not sure it configures as a "switch" because then HG wants to configure when it's scheduled to go on and offf.

The minimote has 4 buttons and I'm not sure HG has support for a single node with 4 buttons...?

The keyfob sounds like it might be a simpler solution that does what I want.

The type is not very important in that case. My keyfob is in "shutter" :D.

Keyfob has four button too.

When you press a button on your minimote, did you see a pop up in HomeGenie ?

If not, did you include with this method ?
Becoming a Secondary/Inclusion Controller to Another Z-Wave Controller or Gateway in an Existing Z-Wave Network
  • Press the button labeled “Learn” – The blue LED will blink slowly.
  • Press the button labeled “Include” on the other Z-Wave controller - The blue and red LEDs will blink quickly to indicate detection of the other Z-Wave controller.
  • The blue LED will stay solid for 2 seconds to indicate success; the red LED will stay solid for 2 seconds to indicate failure.

EDIT: I reached out to Aeon support and they gave me some suggestions that I'm going to try out later. If they work I'll post them here.

This is veering into troubleshooting territory..

No, I don't think I've successfully added this thing as a secondary controller.

I've tried to remove it several times, and that seems to work, but when I try to add it as a secondary controller after removing it, I don't think that works.

Maybe the Aeon Z stick I have doesn't support secondary controllers? Can't seem to find a definitive answer to this through google.

Anyway, I use the removal procedure according to the zstick: hold the button for 3 seconds until the light blinks rapidly. Then press the join button on the minimote. The LED on the zstick stays solid then goes back to blinking rapidly. Device removed, I think.

Then I put the zstick in learn/inclusion mode. The light is blinking slowly.

On the minimote: "Press the button labeled "Learn" – The blue LED will blink slowly." Well I have an older minimote and the button isn't labeled, I'm pressing the lower left button which I think is learn. The blue LED blinks slowly.

...the zstick doesn't have an include button. It has one button. This leads me to believe it doesn't support secondary controllers. Not sure what to do here.

Ok good luck !
After association, you can check the zwave message by launching HomeGenie in command line.
On raspberry :
Code: [Select]
mono /usr/local/bin/homegenie/HomeGenie.exe

So I don't think anything worked...

First I opened a terminal and ran

Code: [Select]
sudo mono /usr/local/bin/homegenie/HomeGenie.exe

I'm running ubuntu. I saw a bunch of output, nothing that seemed to indicate it correctly recognized the minimote.

Aeon provided me with a rough draft for the next version of their minimote instructions. It's pretty rough--it seems like it was written by a non-native english speaker, like one of their engineers, and they haven't had it professionally edited yet. I don't know if they would want me to post the whole thing, so I'll just post the relevant parts:

Quote
There are 2 different minimotes with different labeling. The Scene buttons are numbered, and the buttons under the panel are different. Just update the Minimote firmware with the instructions below and the button mapping will be the same.

+ Button = Include Button
 - Button = Exclude Button
Blank Button = Associate Button
Join Button = Learn Button

Follow these simple steps to put your Minimote as a secondary controller to your current Primary Controller.

1) Put your primary controller into inclusion mode (it’s the same as adding new devices into your network)
2) Tap on the Learn button on your new Minimote
3) You should see the LEDs on the Minimote flash, then blink blue to indicate a success. You should now be able to see and configure the Minimote on your Primary controllers interface.

I removed the minimote according to the instructions for the zstick "Removal-Mode : Deleting/Removing/Excluding ZWave Devices from the Z-Wave Network".

I also tried removing it in the homegenie devices options screen but I'm not sure that worked. It said to press the button on your device, waiting, so I pressed the "learn" button on the minimote and nothing happened--timeout. Same thing happened when I tired to add node through homegenie.

So I removed the zstick and did the normal inclusion, push the zstick button then push the minimote learn button and that seemed successful. When I plugged the zstick back into the machine and ran homegenie discovery it found a generic node. It's done this before, but I don't think it's correct. The "updated nodes" in the output below are my switches and dimmers. The "added node 12" represents the ~5th time I tried to add the minimote. Every time I tried to add the minimote I see a new added node that never gets updated.

Anyway, I added this node to my dash, and press some buttons, and I never saw anything on the hg gui. I never seemed to see anything on the command line that lined up with my button presses.

Did you try to include with the zstick with the + Button ?
Join Button = Learn Button is probably to add a light and command the light directly by the minimote (without a controller : HomeGenie for now).

The instructions are pretty explicit about which button to press and it's not the plus button. The instructions say that the plus button is for when the minimote is primary and you want to add a device to the minimote network. Also when I use the join/learn button, the zstick behaves as I would expect when adding a device to the zstick network: when the zstick is in include mode it blinks slowly, then I press join on the minimote and the zstick light goes solid for three seconds.

I'm not sure if the plus button is going to work, based on my limited experience, but it won't hurt to try. I did not get a chance to try last night but I hopefully will later today.

The tech from Aeon got back to me again and he said this:

Quote
If i remember correctly, HomeGenie requires you to utilize XML sheets to correctly show the devices on the interface. If it doesn't exist, and it shows up as a generic device, you can find the XML sheet here and many others if other devices appear as a generic IO device. http://www.pepper1.net/zwavedb/device/27 I've also attached the xml to this email for you to use.

I am not sure if this is going to help because like I said before, when running homegenie from the command line, even though it seemed to correctly discover a generic device, I never saw any output related to pressing any buttons.

Anyway, now I have two things to try.

Just in case, did you put the device on HG in group id "1" ?

The Aeon Labs support know HomeGenie ! :) And quite good ...

I'm not sure how to put a device in group id "1"?

Unless I'm not checking the right thing, it looks like I can't even see group IDs. I see

Groups List
  • Dashboard
  • Color Lights
  • Bedroom

When I click on a group it does not seem to expose the ID--here's what the URL for Dashboard:

/hg/html/index.html?63564228620949.7#page_configure_groupmodules

This is what my dashboard group looks like:

ZWave Node 5 and 6 are the dimmers I want to control and that's working fine with homegenie and the zstick. I have scenes programmed to control them on cron events. I want to get the minimote to also control those scenes.

Zwave Node 11, 10, and 9 "undefined" represent instances when I removed and re-added the minimote to the zstick network. It seems like this device shows up as undefined in the interface and I do not see any output in the console that seems to be related with the minimote. For example when I press the button on another switch I immediately see:

[22:36:55.505766] SPI > 01 05 00 13 13 01 FB
[22:36:55.506095] SPO < 06

I don't see any output like that from the minimote.

---

Also Aeon sent me an XML file that's supposed to describe the minimote to homegenie and I'm not sure where to drop it. Homegenie seems to have a bunch of similar JSON files but no such XML file. I tried dropping it in a few directories, but now I'm not sure if it worked, or if it did, how to apply those settings to the minimote.

This is what I see when I try to setup the device that gets added to homegenie after I do the inclusion procedure:

Hi,
You probably just need to wake up your device when you pres "get" button :
#################
Waking the Minimote to Receive Commands
1/ Press and hold the button labeled "Learn" for 3 seconds – The Minimote will stay awake for 30 seconds.
2/ The blue LEDs will stay solid for 2 seconds to indicate success.

I too cannot get the minimote to work with HG.  It works fine with a veralite - but not with HG.  It appears to be an issue during the initial pairing - HG is timing out before pairing continues.  I was looking for, but couldn't figure out a way to increase the timer to beyond 10 seconds.  During pairing the device is not falling asleep.  Rather I think there's a query to the device that is timing out, and then pairing fails to complete because HG times out the pairing process.

So I hate to reply to myself...  I was able to get mine to pair, but still could not see anything when I pushed buttons.  I found this thread:

http://www.homegenie.it/forum/index.php?topic=81.msg348#msg348

And sure enough...  Put the device into a mode where its listening (I think i pushed the join button, even after it was paired) then set 250 to 1 and now, as a sensor, it'll trigger 8 different values.  Button 1 short push is 1, button 1 long push is 2 button 2 short is 3 button 2 long is 4 etc etc etc etc.  So yeah, I guess it does work - sortta.  No idea why.
