For those interested, I've gotten gmail working as an smtp server got Home Genie.
As others have noted, you must configure the email program to use SSL and also to use port 587. But even after that, I was not able to get HG to send me messages.
The trick is to loosen the gmail protections against unrecognized programs. The changes are made within your gmail account as shown in the attached pictures.
