I did read instructions...as pasted underneath;

Windows

Download Windows Setup file and run it. Once installed, you can access HomeGenie by right clicking on its tray icon..


Maybe these are not valid for my windows 8.1. 

Like said before, it runs on my other pc's, but not on the laptop. Screen " choose language" does not pop up. and no installation is proceeded.

I've run HG on WinXP and Win7 without issue.  I've never tried Win8, so I can't help with that but I believe Gene said it does work.

I have it running on Windows 8.1 too, haven't experienced the problem you are describing.

Running win7 revision 460 don't see a HomeGenie tray icon and didn't see it in the past (r432)
I'm not running the service, but the Visual Studio debugger.
