I've got some amazon vouchers to use and have no ZWave currently, but thinking of getting into it, so what should I buy to do this? USB based or some of the other home automation stuff that has ZWave in built?

If you're looking to use HomeGenie, I know the Aeon Labs Aeotec Z-Wave Z-Stick Gen 5 works great: https://amzn.com/B00X0AWA6E
I'm using it on a Raspberry Pi 3.

+1 on the Aeotec Z-Stick Gen 5. I replaced an old HomeSeer Z-Troller with it and saw an immediate improvement in reliability. Plus, it's incredibly easy to add/remove devices.
The Z-Stick is compatible with everything I've thrown at it from an old 2Gig CT30 thermostat, to Wayne Dalton plug-in modules, to newer Z-Wave light bulbs. I still haven't been able to include my Schlage locks, but I think that's an HG issue, and not the Z-Stick because I had the same problem with the Z-Troller.
Cheers,
Mike

How did you get it to work? My Raspberry Pi 3 only recognizes the x10 connected to it, but not the Aeon Stick Gen 5? Is there a driver you're supposed to download or can you just Enable it?
