I have been modifying the i2c MCP23017 program to accept up to 5 expanders over long cables using < http://sandboxelectronics.com/?product=pca9600-differential-i2c-long-cable-extender-with-boost-convertor  > This allows me to use the i2c bus to run around the house and i2c devices to be situated far away from the HG computer to operate relays and sensors.
The system was working with a RPi 2, I have recently upgraded to a RPi 3 and I am running into problems.
One problem I am getting is when I compile the MCP23017 program I get -   'OBJECT REFERENCE NOT SET TO AN INSTANCE' error, it was working with RP1 2.
Anyone know what  this could be, I have included the hex file although it is work in progress
