Update on Ubuntu 14.04

I have been running Homegenie on Ubuntu for about a year, never updated. I think it is on 419.  The update button does not work. I downloaded the latest. Tgz file, extracted over existing homegenie directory.  Terminal said system configuration file not found.  I then used the instructions on this website to install the. Deb file. It runs fine, but I can't figure out how to configure it. I finally copied back the old files and am back running on that.

Is there a file I can copy out of old installation to new to bring across configuration?

I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 on a PC purely as a multimedia server. I've never tried installing HG it. My HG server is a RPI 2 running under Raspbian but I'd imagine the upgrade procedure is the same. Firstly backup your current configuration. Next delete all traces of your current HG installation. Download the latest Debian version of HG. Install this download from the command line. Log on to HG and restore your backup configuration.

Personally I reckon HG is best run from an embedded source like RPI or and equivalent SOC board. It should be running 24/7 and runs at a fraction of the cost of a PC.i must try to install it on the PC to see how it performs.

Thanks, I figured it out earlier today. It is running on a mythtv backend, which is up 24x7 to record TV. No additional energy cost to run Homegenie.  And if I want to open it up with OpenSSL server, it will just be one, that give me access to  MythTV and Homegenie, all running on same machine.

Good to hear. Glad to hear you have MythTV running successfully. I spent many frustrating hours trying to configure it and each time Ubuntu went through an upgrade I had to start from scratch. MySQL was always the problem. I'm comfortably running Kodi as a front end and TVHeadend as a backend for DVB S/T and haven't looked back since.

Interesting. I have been running Mythtv since about 2009. I think before Mythbuntu came on scene. But other than lirc issues, it has been fairly painless for me. The good thing is there are alternatives.
