I'm new to all this just got a house and want to link my First Alert zwave smoke alarm to my security sirens so I will know if the laundry room is on fire which is outside the house.  First problem is that HG doesn't know what to do with the smoke alarm it seems as it comes up as generic.  I selected sensor.  Triggering of the smoke alarm doesn't show any popup notifications in the top right to tell me what variable changes.  Second problem is that I will need to make a new program with specific sensors and I'm not sure how to do that.  I have done some basic programming in the past but I'm no expert.

On the other hand the basic security thing works great!

Smoke sensor alarm should be seen as Sensor.Smoke. If not so, then your smoke sensor is not correctly handled by HG.
Can you provide z-wave debugging info?
To capture debugging info, run HG from command line.

I didn't think HG was going to be so in depth :o
What do you mean by running in the command line?  If I run "homegenie" in cmd, it does nothing and allows no input.  If I use the exit command it throws an unhandled exception.  Are there any flags I need to use? tried /debug and -debug  Is there any kind of help file or documentation?

ALSO, My first attempt at pairing a device paired a dimmer switch that does not exist.  How in the world do I un-pair it?

PS the smoke alarm also has CO detector as well.

I think under windows you have to stop the service.
In terminal you have to change to the folder of HG.
and after you launch homegenie as a task by simply tape :

$ HomeGenie.exe

Your smoke sensor is not replying to Manufacturer Specific Get because it's probably "sleeping".
Did you press the device button to wake it up before issuing the "Get" command?
Then you should associate node 1 (the z-wave controller) to group 1 to let HG receive alarm reports from your sensor.

The first post is what happened when I woke it up and used the get command.  The second is what happened first before I woke it up.

Mmm... did you try it with some other software before returning it? =)
HG *should* support that kind of sensors, but as far I remember only *one* user reported his smoke/flood sensors working succesfully with HG.
You can search for that in the old forum at sourceforge.

Cheers,
g.

Would the fact that it was a smoke + co have anything to do with it?
